what is a pre-op for surgery?
before your surgery, you’ll undergo a pre-operative assessment with a doctor. this may include tests such as chest x-rays, blood and urine samples, and heart and lung evaluations to ensure you’re fit for surgery.

what is the procedure for pre-op?
you’ll be taken to a designated area before surgery. if you don’t already have one, an iv line will be placed. if necessary, a sedative may be administered to help you relax.

for day-case procedures with anesthesia:
– obtain information about sedo-analgesia or monitored anesthesia from your doctor or anesthetist, including cost details
– complete the pre-procedure form (*add this document)
– undergo preparation, including changing clothes and vessel line placement by the nurse or anesthesia tech
– rest in the emergency area for 2 hours after the procedure
– do not eat or drink for at least 4 hours post-procedure unless advised otherwise
– avoid driving or working after the procedure
– have a contact person ready to assist at home
– stay with a relative at home on the day of your procedure
– if the procedure involves general or regional anesthesia as part of a package, schedule a free anesthesia consultation at least one day prior

general preparation tips:
– follow fasting guidelines: nothing to eat or drink after midnight for morning surgery, or 6 hours prior for afternoon cases
– eating before surgery may lead to vomiting under anesthesia, which increases risk of aspiration
– maintain personal hygiene: shower the night before and shave the surgery area if instructed
– avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 24 hours before surgery
– ask your doctor about which medications to continue or pause, especially those for diabetes, blood pressure, or heart conditions
– remove all jewellery, nail polish, false nails, and high-heeled shoes for safety and comfort
– make arrangements for hospital services, such as nursing care or room options
– arrive by 8:00–8:30 am and speak with reception for any assistance
