what is a pre-op for surgery?
before your ent procedure, you’ll undergo a pre-operative assessment, usually with a doctor. this includes a hospital visit for tests such as chest x-rays, blood and urine samples, and heart or lung evaluations to ensure you’re fit for surgery.

what is the procedure for pre-op?
on the day of surgery, you’ll be brought to a designated area. if not already in place, an iv line will be inserted. a sedative may be given to help you relax before the procedure begins.

for one-day procedures with anesthesia support:
– get information on sedo-analgesia or monitored anesthesia from your ent specialist or anesthetist, including the cost
– complete the pre-procedure form (*attach document)
– change into appropriate clothing and have a vessel line placed by the nurse or technician
– rest in the emergency area for 2 hours after the procedure
– do not eat or drink for 4 hours post-procedure unless your doctor advises otherwise
– avoid driving or working during the same day
– know who to contact at home for support
– stay with a relative after your procedure
– if you’re under a general or regional anesthesia package, book a free anesthesia consultation at least a day before

general pre-op tips & what to bring:
– follow fasting instructions: nothing after midnight for morning surgery or 6 hours before for afternoon cases
– having food or fluids during surgery increases the risk of vomiting and aspiration
– take a shower the night before, and shave the surgical area if required
– stop smoking and alcohol at least 24 hours before surgery
– ask your doctor about medications, especially for diabetes, blood pressure, or heart conditions
– remove jewellery, nail polish, false nails, and high heels
– give personal items to a trusted relative
– explore any special nursing or room services in advance
– arrive at 8:00–8:30 am and check in at reception
