What is a pre-op for surgery?
before your surgery, you’ll undergo a pre-operative assessment with a doctor. this includes tests like chest x-rays, blood and urine samples, and heart/lung evaluations to ensure you’re fit for the procedure.

What is the procedure for pre-op?
you’ll be taken to a designated area before surgery. if you don’t have an iv line, one will be inserted. a sedative may be given through the iv to help you relax.

for day-case procedures with anesthesia support:
– get details on sedo-analgesia or monitored anesthesia from your doctor or anesthetist
– fill out the required pre-procedure form (*attach document)
– change into surgical clothing and have a vessel line placed by the nurse or anesthesia tech
– rest for 2 hours post-procedure in the emergency area
– do not eat or drink for 4 hours after the procedure, unless your doctor advises otherwise
– avoid driving or working that day
– arrange for a contact person to assist you at home
– stay with a relative for the remainder of the day
– if part of a package requiring general/regional anesthesia, schedule a free anesthesia consultation at least one day before

general preparation guidelines:
– follow fasting instructions: no food/drink after midnight for morning procedures, or 6 hours before afternoon ones
– eating before surgery increases risk of vomiting and aspiration during anesthesia
– take a shower the night before and shave the surgical area if instructed
– avoid smoking or alcohol 24 hours prior
– confirm with your doctor how to handle any medications (e.g., for diabetes, blood pressure, or heart conditions)
– remove jewellery, nail polish, false nails, and high heels — give valuables to your relative
– explore available options like nursing care, room upgrades, and other surgical preparations
– arrive early (around 8:00–8:30 am) and ask reception for help with hospitalization or forms
