Pre Operation

what is a pre-op for surgery?
before your surgery, you’ll undergo a pre-operative assessment with a doctor. this includes a hospital visit for tests such as chest x-rays, blood and urine samples, and heart and lung evaluations to ensure you’re fit for surgery.

what is the procedure for pre-op?
you will be brought to a designated area before surgery. if not already in place, an intravenous (iv) line will be inserted. if needed, a sedative may be given through the iv to help you relax.

for day-case procedures involving anesthesia:
– obtain details on sedo-analgesia or monitored anesthesia from your surgeon or anesthetist, including cost information
– complete the pre-procedure form (*attach document)
– change clothes and have a vessel line placed by the nurse or anesthesia technician
– rest in the emergency area for 2 hours after the procedure
– do not eat or drink for at least 4 hours post-procedure, unless advised otherwise
– avoid driving or working for the rest of the day
– ensure a contact person is available to assist at home
– stay with a relative after your procedure
– for general/regional anesthesia packages, book a free consultation with the anesthetist at least one day before

general preparation & what to bring:
– follow fasting guidelines: no food or drink after midnight for morning surgery, or 6 hours before an afternoon procedure
– food or fluid in the stomach increases risk of vomiting and aspiration under anesthesia
– shower the night before and shave the surgical area if instructed
– avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 24 hours before surgery
– ask your doctor which medications to take or pause, especially for diabetes, blood pressure, or heart conditions
– remove jewellery, nail polish, false nails, and high-heeled shoes
– prepare your belongings and entrust valuables to a relative
– explore hospital services such as special nursing care or room upgrades
– arrive early — around 8:00 to 8:30 am — and check in at reception for any assistance
